On the radio…it is there…
On the T.V…it is also there…
Walking in public…and it is following you around…
Even in silence…
“My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us, the world is full of it and you take as much as you require.”
- Edward Elgar –
Miss Shepherd (from the movie, Lady in the Van) was a pianist who has been forced to stop playing the piano. In her olden years, with her mind going walkabout, she puts it quite clearly:
“How are people supposed to avoid it? You see, I had it at my fingertips. I had it in my bones. I could play in the dark…had to sometimes. The keys were like rooms. C major and D minor. Dark rooms and light rooms.”
Miss Shepherd starts off by asking a very valid question, to which the answer is simple – you can’t. Whether you make music as a composer or musician, or whether you only listen to music, you are being hypnotised by it. Music can make you happy, sad, nostalgic, excited and energetic. Well, there is not a single emotion that music cannot pull out of you. Music is so powerful that you merely cannot help but smile automatically when you hear your favourite song.
Studies have shown that making music, can have a major impact on a child’s education and development. By playing the piano, your brain is being put to the test. There are also those who always want to take up an instrument and who says: “Oh, how I wish to play the piano.”
To the young ones making music, the advice is to never stop. To the older ones wishing to make music, the advice is to do it. To a musician there is no greater joy than to make music. To be able to put your own little touch on a piece of music or to bring out emotions in your own composition.
“New melodies are always around us. God has awarded us the gift and ability to tap into the sphere and bring the music to life at a specific time for a specific purpose.”
- Kgololo Mogotsi -
